Both explore themes of longing, dissatisfaction, and romantic ideals—Emma Bovary in 19th-century France, and Gemma in a contemporary setting. While Emma's story is a critique of romanticism, Gemma Bovery adds humor and a meta perspective through Fabrice Luchini’s character, Martin, who watches her life unfold like a novel.
